Planning Canopy Maintenance Access with the SAL-18J Articulating Boom Lift
Canopy maintenance requires more than sufficient lift height. The platform must reach the maintenance point while the chassis, boom and basket remain clear of columns, roof edges, adjacent structures and site traffic. The Onchtech SAL-18J diesel self-propelled articulating boom lift is an option to assess where elevated access involves reaching over or around obstacles.
Its maximum working height of 20.2 m, maximum horizontal outreach of 11.7 m and platform capacity of 250 kg provide initial equipment-selection references. A canopy maintenance access plan must then verify the actual working position against the machine’s working envelope and site conditions.
Define the canopy access point first
Start with the task location—not simply the canopy’s overall height. Work at a roof edge, beneath a projecting canopy or beside a support column can require different basket positions and approach paths.
- Maintenance position: Record the task height, lateral location and the basket position needed for practical access.
- Canopy geometry: Measure the projection, underside clearance, edge profile and supporting-column locations.
- Obstacles: Identify parked vehicles, barriers, pipework, lighting, overhead services and structures along the boom’s approach path.
- Ground setup: Identify candidate parking positions, surface conditions, slopes, underground voids and ground-bearing constraints.
- People and traffic: Plan separation from pedestrians and vehicles throughout positioning, operation and recovery.
SAL-18J specifications that affect access planning
Use these published specifications to screen the proposed access route and working position. They do not replace the operating manual, working-envelope chart or site-specific risk assessment.
| Parameter | SAL-18J specification | Planning relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum working / platform height | 20.2 m / 18.2 m | Distinguish working reach from basket-floor elevation. |
| Maximum horizontal outreach | 11.7 m | Check the required offset at the actual task height. |
| Platform capacity / maximum occupants | 250 kg / 2 people | Account for personnel, tools and materials within the rated load. |
| Platform dimensions | 1.83 × 0.76 m | Assess basket clearance and practical task space. |
| Stowed dimensions, L × W × H | 9.15 × 2.44 × 2.67 m | Check gates, approach routes and overhead restrictions. |
| Ground clearance | 0.41 m | Review route irregularities; clearance does not establish ground suitability. |
| Inner / outer turning radius | 2.7 m / 5.8 m | Allow maneuvering space around columns and barriers. |
| Turntable rotation | 360° | Check the complete swept area, not only the basket position. |
| Gradeability, stowed | 40% | A travel specification—not permission for elevated work on that slope. |
| Maximum permitted operating inclination | 5° | Verify applicable operating conditions and restrictions in the manual. |
| Standard machine weight | 10,200 kg | Assess ground-bearing capacity; total weight alone does not establish wheel loads. |
Match the machine’s features to the site
Articulating access around canopy obstructions
The articulated boom configuration supports access around obstacles, while 360° turntable rotation provides positioning flexibility. Hydraulic platform self-leveling supports basket orientation during boom movement. These features do not eliminate collision or trapping risks: check clearance throughout the complete boom movement, including approach and withdrawal.
Diesel mobility and ground conditions
The SAL-18J combines diesel power with four-wheel drive and two-wheel steering. Its terrain capability should be assessed separately from the suitability of the working surface. For enclosed or partially enclosed canopy areas, evaluate exhaust exposure and ventilation before choosing diesel equipment. Confirm wind limits and other environmental restrictions from the operating manual.
Build a practical maintenance access plan
- Survey the work area. Record dimensions, access restrictions, ground conditions and every intended maintenance point.
- Verify the working envelope. Check each target position against the reach chart, including the boom path needed to clear the canopy edge.
- Confirm load and clearances. Include all personnel, tools and materials, and allow room for basket movement without contact with the structure.
- Review operating controls. Establish traffic segregation, competent operators, required fall protection and a site-specific emergency lowering and rescue plan.
- Validate before work begins. Complete required inspections and verify the planned setup under actual site conditions, following the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local requirements.
Discuss your canopy access requirements with Onchtech
Onchtech, the equipment brand of Hunan Hongchang Machinery Co., Ltd., provides engineering machinery and OEM/ODM/OBM cooperation options. For a SAL-18J suitability discussion, share the canopy height and projection, required maintenance positions, site photographs, access-route dimensions, ground information and expected platform load.
Request the working-envelope chart, operating documentation and configuration details to support equipment selection. Final suitability depends on the verified machine configuration, site assessment and safe operating requirements—not maximum reach figures alone.
