How to Size an Electric Scissor Lift for Warehouse and Factory Maintenance
Selecting an electric scissor lift for warehouse or factory maintenance starts with the task—not simply the ceiling height. Check where the operator needs to stand, how the machine will reach that position, and whether the floor and operating space are suitable.
The Onchtech SSL-12HD is an electric scissor lift with a maximum platform height of 12 m, a maximum working height of 14 m and a rated load of 360 kg. These specifications provide a starting point for assessing overhead lighting, ceiling-system and mechanical or electrical maintenance tasks; they do not establish suitability for every site.
1. Match platform height to the maintenance task
Platform height is the height of the platform floor; working height describes the stated working reach. For the SSL-12HD, these maximum values are 12 m and 14 m respectively. A maintenance point at 14 m is not automatically accessible: operator position, task posture, tool handling and intervening obstructions all affect practical reach.
- Measure the maintenance point from the floor where the machine will operate, rather than relying only on building drawings.
- Identify the platform position needed for the operator to work without leaning beyond the guardrails.
- Check beams, ducts, cable trays, racks and suspended services along the lifting path.
- Assess horizontal access separately. A platform extension does not by itself establish reach over shelving or machinery.
2. Check dimensions against the complete access route
Measure the route from the unloading or storage location to each work position. Door openings, aisle intersections, floor transitions and overhead restrictions can be more limiting than the workspace itself.
| Parameter | Specification | What to verify on site |
|---|---|---|
| Stowed length × width | 2.45 m × 1.17 m | Clear passage dimensions, approaches and maneuvering space |
| Stowed height, guardrails unfolded / folded | 2.64 m / 2.08 m | Lowest doorway, overhead services and permitted guardrail-folding procedure |
| Platform length × width | 2.27 m × 1.12 m | Operator workspace, tool placement and surrounding obstructions |
| Sliding platform extension | 0.9 m | Deployment clearance and extension-specific loading restrictions |
| Inside / outside turning radius | 0 m / 2.2 m | Turning envelope at aisle ends, corners and doorway approaches |
| Ground clearance / with pothole protection lowered | 0.08 m / 0.02 m | Thresholds, joints, drainage channels and uneven transitions |
| Standard machine weight | 2,960 kg | Floor, cover, ramp and transport-lift capacity, including applicable wheel loads |
A 1.17 m machine width is not a minimum aisle-width recommendation. Allow for turning, obstacles and the clearances required by the operating manual and site risk assessment. Folded height is an access-planning dimension, not permission to operate with guardrails folded.
3. Calculate the complete platform load
The SSL-12HD has a 360 kg rated load and a maximum occupancy of two people indoors or one person outdoors. Both the load limit and occupancy limit must be observed.
Total platform load = personnel + tools + materials + any other carried equipment.
Plan the task using actual carried weights. Do not assume the full 360 kg rating applies to the extension deck; confirm its permitted load and load distribution in the current operating manual. Outdoor use also requires verification of applicable wind and operating restrictions.
4. Verify floor support and movement conditions
Warehouse slabs, mezzanines, service covers and loading routes need separate checks. The machine’s standard weight alone is insufficient to establish floor suitability: the assessment must account for carried load, concentrated wheel loads and the supporting structure. Obtain the necessary machine loading information and a competent site assessment where required.
- Travel speeds: the listed speeds are 3.5 km/h stowed and 0.8 km/h raised. Raised-travel capability does not mean travel is permitted at every height or under every site condition.
- Gradeability: the listed 25% gradeability applies in the stowed condition; it is not an allowable slope for elevated work.
- Operating inclination: the specification lists 1.5° / 3°. Confirm the corresponding directions and operating limits in the manual before assessing a sloped work area.
Site measurement checklist for a sizing review
- Task: maintenance-point height, task description, required operator position and nearby obstructions.
- Route: narrowest clear opening, lowest overhead clearance, threshold details, corner dimensions and route photographs.
- Work area: available floor space, platform-extension clearance and nearby racks, machinery or services.
- Floor conditions: supporting-floor information, slopes, joints, covers, ramps and any transport-lift restrictions.
- Load: number of operators and combined weight of personnel, tools, materials and equipment.
- Use pattern: indoor or outdoor location, expected work schedule and available charging arrangements.
