Assess outdoor site suitability for the Onchtech SSL-16RT scissor lift: ground support, access, slopes, overhead clearance and load planning for an 18 m working height.
Onchtech SSL-16RT rough-terrain scissor lift at an outdoor construction site, with assessment callouts for ground support, access width, slope and overhead clearance

Assessing an outdoor worksite for the Onchtech SSL-16RT rough-terrain scissor lift starts with the ground, access route and intended task—not working height alone. The machine provides an 18 m maximum working height, a 16 m maximum platform height and a 680 kg rated capacity, with space for up to four people within the applicable load limits.

For project teams and equipment buyers planning façade installation, bridge work, steel-structure installation or outdoor infrastructure maintenance, the assessment below connects the published machine specifications with the site conditions that need verification before deployment.

Keep travel capability separate from operating limits

The SSL-16RT’s 40% gradeability applies when the machine is stowed. It is not an allowable slope for elevated operation. Rough-terrain tyres and engine power do not establish whether a surface can support the machine or whether it is suitable for lifting. Confirm ground support, operating inclination and all applicable restrictions against the equipment manual before use.

1. Verify ground support across the full work area

The SSL-16RT has a published standard weight of 8,830 kg. This is a starting point for site planning, not a ground-bearing pressure value. A competent assessment should consider the actual configured machine, platform load and wheel reactions for the intended operating condition.

  • Inspect the route and lifting positions: identify soft fill, waterlogged ground, loose aggregate, settlement, trenches and unsupported edges.
  • Check hidden or structural hazards: covers, buried services, underground voids, suspended slabs and temporary structures may require specific load verification.
  • Obtain the necessary loading information: confirm relevant wheel loads and contact details with the supplier, and have the responsible site professional assess the supporting surface.
  • Reassess changing conditions: rainfall, excavation and site traffic can alter a previously acceptable route or work position.

Do not estimate ground pressure by dividing machine weight by its overall footprint. Loads transfer through the tyres, and the published dimensions alone do not establish local ground loading.

2. Check access dimensions and turning space

Measure the complete route from the unloading location to each work position. Include gates, temporary roadways, corners, overhead services and any area where the machine must turn. Machine dimensions are reference values; they are not minimum safe passage dimensions.

SSL-16RT access-planning reference
Specification Published value
Stowed length × width 4.88 m × 2.29 m
Stowed height, unfolded / folded 3.19 m / 2.63 m
Inside / outside turning radius 2.4 m / 5.5 m
Ground clearance 0.20 m
Wheelbase 2.84 m

Allow appropriate clearance for manoeuvring and site hazards. Verify the permitted folded configuration and folding procedure in the manual before using the lower height for access planning. Ground clearance alone does not confirm that a ramp transition, rut or obstacle can be crossed safely.

3. Measure slopes and distinguish travel from lifting

The published specification lists 40% gradeability when stowed and a maximum allowable working inclination of 2° / 3°. The supplied specification does not identify the direction associated with each inclination value. Confirm the directional limits and conditions in the model-specific manual rather than assigning them by assumption.

  • Measure gradients along the access route and at each proposed lifting position.
  • Assess traction and surface condition separately from the stated gradeability.
  • Do not interpret 40% gradeability as 40 degrees or as permission to raise the platform on that slope.
  • Published travel speeds are 6.1 km/h stowed and 0.5 km/h elevated. These values do not authorise elevated travel on an unassessed surface; follow the manual’s restrictions.

4. Assess overhead space, weather and engine operation

The 18 m working height is not the platform floor height; the maximum platform height is 16 m. Check the task location against both values, and inspect the full movement envelope for beams, bridge decks, pipework, electrical lines and other obstructions. Address crushing and trapping risks as the platform approaches a structure.

Confirm required electrical clearances under applicable site rules and regulations. Check the model-specific outdoor wind rating and operating restrictions before scheduling work: no wind-speed limit is provided in the supplied specifications. Large panels or façade components also require assessment of wind exposure and handling arrangements.

The SSL-16RT is specified with a YANMAR / WEICHAI engine. Confirm the supplied engine configuration and relevant local requirements. For tunnel or partially enclosed work, assess exhaust exposure and ventilation before considering the machine suitable.

5. Plan the combined personnel and material load

The platform measures 4.2 m × 1.83 m, with a published 1.3 m sliding extension. Its 680 kg rated capacity must account for personnel, tools, materials and any other carried equipment. The maximum occupancy of four people does not provide an additional material allowance beyond the applicable capacity.

  • Prepare a load list for each task rather than relying on the number of occupants alone.
  • Confirm extension-platform capacity, load distribution and configuration-specific restrictions from the platform markings and manual; these details are not included in the supplied data.
  • Check that materials can be positioned without obstructing access or compromising the required working space.
  • Do not treat the platform capacity as a crane rating. Any proposed handling of large façade or structural components needs a separately assessed method within the manufacturer’s permitted use.

Before approving deployment

  1. Document the task: required platform height, work locations, personnel, tools and material loads.
  2. Survey the site: ground support, access dimensions, turning areas, gradients and overhead hazards.
  3. Resolve missing limits: obtain the applicable manual, loading information, wind rating and extension-platform restrictions.
  4. Complete site controls: confirm trained and authorised operators, pre-use inspection, exclusion arrangements and an emergency lowering and rescue plan.

Discuss your site requirements with Onchtech

Onchtech, the equipment brand of Hunan Hongchang Machinery Co., Ltd., supplies engineering machinery and supports OEM, ODM and OBM cooperation. For an SSL-16RT assessment, share your access measurements, ground information, slope survey, required working height and planned platform load so the equipment configuration and documentation can be reviewed against your project needs.

Final site suitability must be established using the supplied machine’s manual, applicable regulations and a competent site assessment. Published specifications support selection; they do not replace approval of the actual operating conditions.
